Sonata no.5 for piano: a piece for a new Guinness World Record! Thursday May 7, 2015 (9:00 PM), the Teatro Verdi in Fiorenzuola d’Arda will host the absolute premiere performance of Sonata no.5, the longest ever written. The challenging work, of which an even longer version exists, will be performed in its “short” version (approximately 3 hours) by Genoese pianist Massimiliano Damerini. The event is sponsored by SIMC (Italian Contemporary Music Society), Associazione Novecento of Piacenza and by Centro Formazione Alta Cultura of Carpi (Modena).

On Thursday, May 7, 2015 at 9:00 PM at Teatro Verdi in Fiorenzuola d’Arda (Piacenza), Genoese pianist Massimiliano Damerini will embark on the maiden voyage of the new and extraordinary Sonata no.5, a piano Sonata – better yet, a tried and true listening adventure – which lasts 6 hours, a duration worthy of a Guinness World Record. This event has been added – not on season tickets – to the events calendar of the 2015 prose and music season of Teatro Verdi in Fiorenzuola to mark the ten-year anniversary of the theater’s reopening.

The piece is through-composed (as the German musicologists use to say, durchkomponiert, with no pauses and no stops at all) and conceived in the spirit of monumental grandeur as well as achieved according to a variety of alternative versions (from 3 to 7 hours) cut out according to syntactic modules cross-planned and coordinated with one another, as corresponding “rollaway panels”.

Writing this score (653 pages in its full version) kept Landini busy for five years, representing a tried and true manifesto for a new approach to listening: laid back and slow. As the composer himself explains in an article already in print, the event has a willingly monumental character to fulfill new needs of visibility and complexity, but also the necessary grandeur, set by the contemporary “societé du spectacle”.

The event will be held with the support of: Centro Formazione Alta Cultura (Carpi, Modena) – Associazione Novecento (Piacenza) – SIMC (Italian Contemporary Music Society) (Milan).
